Aizawl: The Mizoram government is pushing forward with plans for a 132-MW hydropower plant on the Tuivai river in Saitual district. During a recent review meeting, Chief Minister Lalduhoma confirmed the project is estimated to cost 2,289 crore rupees and is slated for completion within five years. Officials have finished the detailed project report and are preparing to begin the tendering process, potentially through a public-private partnership.

This initiative aims to address a critical energy shortfall in the state. According to recent survey data, Mizoram faces a peak electricity demand of 182 MW, which is expected to climb to 213 MW by 2030. Currently, the state produces only 10 percent of its required power and spends approximately 649 crore rupees every year on energy purchases. Officials noted that increasing local generation capacity has become a top priority to stabilize the power supply.

The project has a long history, dating back to a 1992 survey by the Central Water Commission. While the original proposal envisioned a 210-MW facility, the design was later scaled back to 132 MW because part of the proposed dam site sat within the borders of neighboring Manipur. In addition to the Tuivai proposal, the government is currently monitoring progress on the Tuirini Hydroelectric Project and various improvements under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
