Aizawl: Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with state officials this week to review the rollout of the Ginger USP Project, a major initiative aimed at transforming ginger production in Mizoram. The project brings together five different government departments to build a robust supply chain for the state's signature crop.
A primary processing center will anchor the operation in Mualkawi, located in the Champhai district. This facility will manage specialized tasks such as oil extraction, professional packaging, and branding. Complementing this hub, three smaller spoke units will be established in Tualcheng, Zotlang, and Vaphai to handle initial cleaning, grading, and drying of the ginger harvest.
The government intends to have all machinery installed by the end of the year. Once operational, private investors, local entrepreneurs, and societies will manage the facilities rather than the state government. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region designated ginger as the state's Unique Selling Proposition, leading to a comprehensive development plan with a total estimated budget of 189.78 crore rupees.
The North Eastern Council has already cleared 30.13 crore rupees to fund the construction of these processing units. This initial phase relies on a broad coalition of national agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Ministry of Rural Development, and international bodies like IFAD. Officials noted that while the current focus remains on the initial infrastructure, there is a clear path to expand the project to other districts in the future.
