Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently launched the Mizo Ginger USP Mission, an initiative aimed at strengthening the state's agricultural economy and increasing income for local farmers. The project focuses on transforming the industry from raw sales to high-value processing, leveraging the state's ginger, which is recognized by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region for its pharmaceutical quality.
Backed by Rs 30.13 crore in funding from the Ministry of DoNER, the state is establishing four modern processing units in the Champhai district. This infrastructure development is expected to benefit 20,000 households while creating approximately 100 new jobs. The government plans to utilize the crop's GI tag to market processed goods like ginger oil globally, with the National Cooperative Exports Limited providing necessary training for international trade.
In addition to the ginger mission, the Chief Minister introduced the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme for arhar, sesame, and sunflower crops. NAFED and the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board will manage procurement through local collection centres. To ensure transparency, payments will be issued directly to farmers through the Direct Benefit Transfer system, bypassing traditional intermediaries.
