Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the Mizo Ginger Unique Selling Proposition (USP) Mission and a new price support scheme on May 2. The initiatives aim to strengthen the state agricultural economy by increasing farmers' incomes and promoting sustainable cultivation.
Speaking at a ginger export workshop in Aizawl, the Chief Minister highlighted the superior quality of Mizoram ginger, which meets pharmaceutical-grade standards. The government plans to move beyond selling raw produce by focusing on processing and value addition, including the creation of products like ginger oil.
Backed by Rs 30.13 crore in funding from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the project will establish four modern processing units in the Champhai district. This effort is expected to support 20,000 farmers and create nearly 100 new jobs. The state is also partnering with National Cooperative Exports Limited to help farmers navigate export procedures and quality standards.
Alongside the ginger initiative, the government is implementing the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme for arhar, sesame, and sunflower crops. Under this plan, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board will manage procurement at established collection centers. The scheme sets support prices at Rs 84.50 per kg for arhar, Rs 103.46 per kg for sesame, and Rs 83.43 per kg for sunflower.
