Aizawl: Mizoram is cleaning house. The state taxation department launched a statewide crackdown on bogus Goods and Services Tax registrations following the discovery of widespread document forgery. State officials identified several suspicious applications that relied on fake addresses and unauthenticated paperwork.
The investigation exposed a scheme involving identity theft. Scammers allegedly used the names and private property details of citizens without permission to secure tax credentials. These irregularities surfaced after tax authorities used risk-based assessments, data analytics, and boots-on-the-ground inspections to verify business operations.
Authorities are now taking legal action against the offenders under the Mizoram Goods and Services Tax Act of 2017. The department warns that public cooperation is required to stop these crimes. Officials urged locals to stay alert regarding their private data. The state taxation department said, "public cooperation is crucial in preventing tax fraud and safeguarding the integrity of the GST system."
Property owners must vet anyone asking for rental agreements or consent letters. Do not sign documents for strangers. Check credentials first. Anyone who spots suspicious activity or unauthorized use of their personal address should report it to the taxation department immediately.
