Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the Mizo Ginger USP Mission this week, signaling a strategic shift toward value addition for the state’s high-quality ginger crops. During an event at Falkland, he announced a 30.13 crore investment supported by the Ministry of DoNER to establish four modern processing units in the Champhai district. This infrastructure project aims to support 20,000 households and create roughly 100 jobs.
The Chief Minister noted that while Mizoram’s ginger is smaller than other varieties, its pharmaceutical-grade quality offers a significant competitive advantage. The government intends to leverage this reputation and the state's GI Tag status to produce high-value goods like ginger oil for national and global markets. To assist this transition, the National Cooperative Exports Limited is conducting workshops to train local farmers on export procedures and market access.
In addition to the ginger initiative, the government introduced the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme for Arhar, sesame, and sunflower crops. Starting this harvest season, the state has set minimum support prices at 84.50 rupees per kilogram for Arhar, 103.46 rupees for sesame, and 83.43 rupees for sunflower. NAFED and the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board will manage procurement, with payments delivered directly to farmers through the Direct Benefit Transfer system.
Lalduhoma expressed his appreciation to Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for the Ministry of DoNER's continued financial backing. The event, attended by approximately 250 farmers and cooperative representatives, serves as a foundation for a broader effort to modernize local agriculture and increase financial security for rural families.
