Aizawl: Mizoram Governor VK Singh has called for a united front against the growing threat of drug and substance abuse in the state. Speaking during the 91st raising day celebrations of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the Governor urged citizens to embrace the traditional Mizo value of Tlawmngaihna, which embodies the spirit of selflessness, compassion, and voluntary service.
During the event, Singh praised the YMA for its extensive history of supporting government welfare initiatives, assisting the needy, and preserving cultural heritage. He emphasized that local communities and institutions must work together to safeguard the younger generation from the dangers of addiction.
The YMA celebrated its anniversary with various activities, including sports, cultural performances, and community service projects such as cleanliness drives and outreach to orphanages and rehabilitation centers. Central YMA president R. Lalngheta reinforced the Governor's message by calling on the membership to increase their efforts against the narcotics trade. He explicitly stated that drug dealers are "enemies of families and communities."
Founded in 1935 as the Young Lushai Association before being renamed in 1947, the YMA has become one of the most prominent civil society organizations in the region. Headquartered in Aizawl, the association maintains a vast network of over 800 branches across Mizoram, neighboring Indian states, and Bangladesh.
