Aizawl: Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh officially launched the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Lok Bhavan this week. The new campaign aims to tackle soil degradation across the state by encouraging farmers to transition toward natural farming practices and use fertilizers based on specific soil test results.

During the event, Governor Singh cautioned against the heavy use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which he noted negatively affect both land productivity and human health. He urged local farmers to embrace sustainable methods aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Mission on Natural Farming. The Governor highlighted the specific difficulties of maintaining soil health on Mizoram's hilly slopes, where jhum cultivation is common. He called for better farmer training, improved market access, and a strategic pivot toward high-value organic crops to increase local income and food security.

Central Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anupam Mishra joined the discussion, emphasizing the need to lower energy use in crop production. He encouraged farmers to utilize existing federal support programs, including Soil Health Cards, Kisan Credit Cards, and crop insurance.

The initiative will continue through June, with agricultural experts and representatives from Krishi Vigyan Kendra hosting seminars and field demonstrations. These sessions will teach farmers how to utilize bio-fertilizers and green manuring techniques to restore soil fertility. Agriculture Minister P.C. Vanlalruata also attended the launch, which featured presentations from academic and agricultural officials to highlight the campaign’s goals.
