Aizawl: Nazareth Lalthazuala Hmar has made history as the first athlete from Mizoram to secure a contract with the global combat sports promotion ONE Championship. The 25-year-old fighter earned the US$100,000 deal following a decisive victory against Jhon Brutus of the Philippines at ONE Friday Fights 157 in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to the contract, he received a performance bonus of 35,000 Thai Baht for his showing.

Born in Zemabawk, Nazareth moved into combat sports from a modest background, having previously worked as a vegetable seller and a commercial vehicle driver. He initially focused on boxing in 2022 before transitioning to mixed martial arts. His rise has been rapid, moving from a professional debut in Uganda in 2024 to an undefeated professional record of 8-0.

Nazareth is a three-time national flyweight MMA champion who also holds various accolades in kickboxing and Wushu. His journey includes a successful ONE Championship debut in November 2025 against Japan’s Masaki Suzuki. Currently training under coach Manas Daimary at the Dojang MMA & Fitness Studio in Guwahati, Assam, he remains a rising figure in Indian combat sports.

Reflecting on the nature of his success, the fighter has highlighted his commitment to the sport, stating, "Nazareth rose from humble beginnings, reportedly working as a vegetable seller and commercial vehicle driver before pursuing a career in combat sports." His latest achievement marks a significant milestone for athletes from Mizoram competing on the international stage.
