Aizawl: The Mizoram government is accelerating plans for the 132 MW Tuivai Hydroelectric Project in Saitual district to bolster the state's energy infrastructure. Chief Minister Lalduhoma held a high-level review meeting with Power Minister F. Rodingliana and department officials to address the project's timeline and implementation strategy. Estimated at Rs 2,289.50 crore, the project is expected to take five years to complete.
Officials confirmed that the Detailed Project Report is finalized and the project is ready for the tendering stage. To ensure efficiency, the government is exploring a Public-Private Partnership model. This push for domestic generation comes as Mizoram struggles with a significant gap between local production and rising demand. Current peak demand sits at 182 MW, with projections reaching 213 MW by 2030, yet local output accounts for only 10 per cent of consumption.
The state currently spends Rs 649.54 crore annually on electricity imports. The Tuivai project, originally envisioned in 1992, was redesigned from a 210 MW capacity to 132 MW to address boundary concerns with neighboring Manipur. Beyond the Tuivai initiative, authorities also reviewed the status of the Tuirini Hydroelectric Project and infrastructure upgrades under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. The administration plans to discuss these power sector challenges with Union Power Minister Manohar Lal during his upcoming visit.
