Aizawl: The Mizoram government is accelerating plans to achieve power self-sufficiency by fast-tracking the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Project in Saitual district. State Power Minister F. Rodingliana chaired a review meeting on Friday to discuss key infrastructure initiatives following recent talks between Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

Officials from the Finance, Planning, and Power and Electricity departments met to finalize funding and implementation strategies for the Tuivai project, which sits near the Manipur border. The state also reviewed the Tuichang Pumped Storage Project as part of its strategy to improve the regional energy landscape. Since the Detailed Project Report for the Tuivai facility is already finished, the administration plans to allocate immediate funding to begin construction.

Beyond new generation capacity, the state is pushing to corporatize the Power and Electricity Department to improve operational efficiency. Engineer-in-Chief Ngursailova Sailo confirmed that the department is currently unbundling its structure into separate entities for transmission, distribution, and generation. He noted that staff members support this transition, stating, "employees were not opposed to corporatisation as long as it benefits both the public and the government."

The meeting included Adviser to the Chief Minister TBC Lalvenchhunga along with other senior department heads. This shift toward a corporate model is intended to streamline the state's power sector and facilitate future infrastructure expansion.
