Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee is demanding that the state government immediately suspend the cess on petrol and diesel. MPCC treasurer Dr. Lalmalsawma Nghaka argued that surging global fuel costs are driving up local inflation, specifically impacting the price of food, essential goods, and public transportation.

During a press conference in Aizawl, Nghaka criticized the state administration led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma. He pointed to government data showing that authorities have collected over 143 crore rupees in fuel cess through April. This includes a 4 rupee per litre levy introduced last September to fund social infrastructure and road maintenance, which the opposition party described as an unprecedented tax burden.

Nghaka also took aim at the central government, blaming the BJP-led administration for frequent price hikes and ineffective economic policies. He questioned the impact of national initiatives like Make in India, claiming the country remains overly reliant on Chinese imports for vital sectors such as solar modules and pharmaceutical materials.

The Congress leader insisted that local officials must prioritize the well-being of residents by easing the tax burden. He stated that the current economic climate requires the government to show empathy and provide relief to citizens struggling with the ripple effects of rising international energy prices.
