Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma warned on Thursday that the state is facing significant pressure as more refugees continue to flee the civil conflict in Myanmar. Speaking in Shillong, the Chief Minister noted that the influx of displaced individuals has already reached a level that challenges the administrative and financial capacity of his government.

The state shares a porous border with Myanmar and maintains deep ethnic and cultural ties with the communities across the frontier. Thousands of people have sought safety in Mizoram since the 2021 military coup triggered widespread violence between the Myanmar military and various Ethnic Armed Organisations.

Addressing the ongoing crisis, Lalduhoma stated, "Due to the geopolitical condition there, we are getting many displaced people nowadays. It is likely that we will get more people seeking safety. This has become a burden for us."

State authorities have long voiced concerns regarding the strain placed on local infrastructure and welfare services. Despite these increasing difficulties, the government has maintained its commitment to providing shelter and humanitarian support, grounded in the historical connections between the people of Mizoram and those living across the border.
