Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently attended the Ginger Festival held at the Samthang Community Hall in the Khawzawl district. During the event, he highlighted the state's potential to become a leader in organic ginger production, noting that Mizoram ginger is highly valued for its low fiber content and richness in essential oils, making it ideal for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
To bolster the industry, the Chief Minister announced that the Ministry of DoNER has approved the Mizoram Ginger USP Sustainable Cultivation and Value Chain Development Project. With a total budget of approximately 190 crore, the initiative aims to transform the local agricultural landscape. Of this amount, 30.13 crore has already been sanctioned to establish essential processing units. The primary facility will be constructed at Mualkawi in Champhai district, supported by additional infrastructure at Tualcheng, Vaphai, and Zotlang to ensure regional farmers can effectively process their harvests.
Lalduhoma emphasized that shifting from raw material sales to processing and value addition is essential for reducing post-harvest wastage and increasing profit margins for farmers. He also reiterated the government's commitment to sustainable organic farming to protect long-term soil health. Addressing the attendees, Dr. KC Lalmalsawmzauva, Adviser to the Chief Minister, noted that the government has already invested 18 crore toward support price procurement this year to assist local growers.
