Aizawl: Mizoram is experiencing a significant rise in tourism, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma pointing to the capital city of Aizawl as a major draw for visitors. The city has earned the nickname silent city due to the disciplined nature of its residents and a near-total absence of unnecessary vehicle honking. During a discussion with India Today NE, the Chief Minister emphasized this unique quality. "If you come to Aizawl, you will never hear horns unless it is absolutely necessary. It is called a silent city," he said.
Beyond quiet streets, Lalduhoma highlighted the state's strong social values as a key factor in attracting travelers. A notable example is the prevalence of unattended shops where customers select items and pay on their own initiative. The state also maintains a reputation as a highly safe environment for women, further boosting its appeal to domestic and international tourists alike.
The state welcomed approximately eight lakh visitors in 2025. Lalduhoma attributes this growth to improved transportation, including a new railway connection, alongside the state's status as the country's first fully literate region and its reputation as India's ginger capital. Looking toward the future, the government is focusing on developing Thenzawl into a Peace City featuring an international golf course, paragliding facilities, and new ropeway infrastructure to sustain the tourism momentum.
