Aizawl: Mizoram Minister for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Prof. Lalnilawma, has officially laid the foundation stone for an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar. The project is managed by the India Meteorological Department under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and aims to bolster the state's meteorological infrastructure.

During the virtual ceremony, Prof. Lalnilawma emphasized the critical need for better forecasting tools in a region vulnerable to natural hazards. He stated, "While Mizoram is a beautiful place, it is also highly prone to disasters, making weather forecasting equipment one of its most essential needs." The minister noted that access to reliable data is vital for a state's overall safety and strategic planning.

The new radar system is designed to provide precise meteorological data to assist disaster management agencies, local farmers, and the aviation industry. State officials expect the installation to significantly improve the accuracy of weather reports across Northeast India.

Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Udit Prakash Rai called for closer cooperation between government departments to ensure the technology is used effectively. He urged the India Meteorological Department to maintain a high standard of reporting to keep the public and authorities informed during severe weather events.
