Aizawl: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl student organization has announced plans to protest at the Mizoram tourism office on May 25. This decision follows the government's controversial move to reinstate R Lalrodingi, a retired additional director from the Commerce and Industries, and Geology and Mining departments, to the position of tourism director.
The administration initially appointed Lalrodingi to the tourism role and as an officer on special duty to the Chief Minister in late April. Following pressure from the student group, the government canceled the tourism appointment in mid-May but maintained her political role. However, a new order issued last Friday reversed that decision, granting her the tourism director charge once again.
MZP president C Lalremruata stated that Chief Minister Lalduhoma had provided a written commitment during a May 13 meeting to review the appointment. The organization accepts the political nature of the officer on special duty role but maintains that the tourism director position should not be held by a retired official. The student body argues that such re-employments harm career progression for current employees and limit job opportunities for qualified younger candidates.
Describing the government's actions as a breach of trust, the student leadership expressed disappointment that their objections were ignored after receiving assurances from the Chief Minister. The group intends to use the upcoming protest to challenge this practice and discourage similar appointments in the future.
