Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has lauded the decision to include the Khasi and Garo languages in the Central Board of Secondary Education's three-language framework. He described the move as a significant milestone that will promote inclusive education while helping to preserve the cultural identity of the state.
Sangma thanked Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his swift intervention in the process. According to the Chief Minister, the change will simplify operations for schools across Meghalaya, provide better support for language teachers, and offer students more academic flexibility. By integrating these indigenous languages into the curriculum, the state aims to strengthen mother-tongue education for students beginning in the sixth grade.
The CBSE's R3 framework encourages schools to teach three languages starting from the middle school level. Supporters of the policy argue that the addition of Khasi and Garo reflects a broader commitment to respecting linguistic diversity. This development is expected to foster an education system that values local heritage alongside national academic standards.
