Shillong: Meghalaya has officially launched its first eco-sustainable habitat initiative at Mawlangwir Village in the South West Khasi Hills District. Known as the Pine Home Eco-Sustainable Model Project, this development represents a major effort to advance sustainable architecture and rural growth in the region. The project operates with a total budget of 4 crore rupees, including a 2 crore rupee building cost, and is funded by Meghalayan Age Limited alongside the Directorate of Tourism.
The initiative showcases a collaboration between indigenous craftsmanship and international design expertise. At the launch event, Project Manager Jana Bednarova outlined the project objectives, while Superintending Engineer Michael Mawroh emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to sustainable progress. Slovakian architects Marek Guga and Jozef Fugger also contributed by discussing how to integrate traditional building methods with modern, environmentally conscious technologies.
State officials view the project as a blueprint for future construction across the region. By prioritizing ecological responsibility alongside cultural sensitivity, the Pine Home model aims to protect the local environment while preserving the state's rich heritage. This effort positions Meghalaya as a leader in sustainable development and responsible architectural innovation.
