Guwahati: Mridumudra Deka died July 3 at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The 18-year-old spent over a month in critical care after a May 30 assault in Assam's Nalbari district. She never recovered from her injuries.

The attack claimed two lives. Nineteen-year-old Madhurjya Barman, an official with the West Nalbari Regional Students Union, died at the scene. Locals found the pair bleeding by the roadside near Gangapur. They were returning home on a scooter when an attacker intercepted them.

Police identified Roz Ali as the prime suspect. Ali died during a police encounter in Mukalmua shortly after the incident. While some groups attempted to link the violence to "love jihad," investigators have not officially confirmed any motive behind the attack.

The secondary death triggered fresh protests across Nalbari. Residents and student organizations want a faster investigation. Authorities maintain that the police have not endorsed such claims of religious motivation.
