Gangtok: Sikkim BJP president D.R. Thapa met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday. He brought a laundry list of problems. Thapa demanded tighter intelligence and cyber surveillance to block extremist activity in the border state. Recent security jitters stem from the arrest of a 19-year-old accused of pushing Islamic State propaganda online.
The delegation pushed for a quick constitutional fix for the Limboo-Tamang seat reservation issue. They also want 12 local tribal groups granted Scheduled Tribe status. Thapa argued that failing to act risks local stability. The party statement noted that Shah “assured the delegation that all the issues raised would be examined seriously and given due consideration in the interest of Sikkim’s security, development and the welfare of its people.”
Natural disasters battered the region recently. Thapa asked for more federal cash to repair infrastructure and prepare for future storms. He warned that if the Centre kills tax-linked industrial incentives after 2027, companies will flee the state. Jobs will vanish. The BJP is trying to build its footprint in the region while pledging loyalty to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
