Guwahati: At least 60 people are under medical care after a suspected food poisoning outbreak hit Dhemaji. The victims, including children, fell ill two days after attending a birthday feast on June 30 at Premdhar Sungkorang’s home in Gali Mrigang village.

Patients suffered from vomiting and diarrhea. Their conditions turned severe fast. Families rushed them to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh using ambulances, buses, and private vehicles.

The sudden influx of sick patients overwhelmed the hospital casualty department. Medical staff scrambled to treat the victims on a war footing. Hospital officials reported that the situation created an "unprecedented situation in the hospital's emergency department."

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact source of the tainted food. An investigation into the feast remains ongoing.
