Shillong: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced a new High-Altitude Training Centre for Meghalaya, valued at Rs 150 crore. This project aims to bolster sports infrastructure in the North East as the state prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027.

During a review meeting in Shillong on May 30, Mandaviya assessed the state's progress regarding venue development and infrastructure timelines. He expressed confidence in Meghalaya's readiness, suggesting the event will establish new benchmarks for the competition. The meeting included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha.

Mandaviya emphasized that the Games should serve as a platform to educate athletes about the dangers of doping. He also inaugurated a multipurpose integrated sports indoor hall in Shillong during his three-day visit, noting that the new facility will provide vital opportunities for young athletes in the region.

The minister underscored the government's commitment to the North East, stating that resource allocation is no longer tied to a state's size or population. He highlighted that while the region holds about four percent of India's population, it hosts nearly 25 percent of the nation's Khelo India Centres to improve grassroots coaching access.
