Shillong: The Meghalaya Transport Department has officially implemented the Display of Name Boards on Motor Vehicles Regulations, 2026. This mandate establishes clear guidelines for who may use official designation plates and dictates exactly how these boards must be displayed on government vehicles.
Under the new rules, displaying government names, department titles, or official designations is prohibited without prior authorization. Only specific individuals are permitted to use these boards, including the Governor, Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, members of the judiciary, and senior officials like the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police.
The regulations require that official plates be mounted at the front and rear of the vehicle, measuring 50 cm by 15 cm. The government stated that "most boards are required to measure 50 cm by 15 cm, with specified colour schemes depending on the office held." To maintain accountability, officials must remove or cover these boards whenever the designated dignitary is not present in the vehicle.
The state clarified that these rules do not authorize the use of sirens, beacons, or tinted glass, which remain subject to separate Home Department policies. Any future changes to these regulations will be reviewed by a committee led by the Chief Secretary, and these new standards now replace all previous government orders regarding vehicle identification plates.
