Meghalaya State Commission for Women Orders Action Against Cricket Officials Over Harassment

Shillong: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has directed the Meghalaya Cricket Association to take disciplinary action against head coach Hemant Roy and assistant manager Sanjay Mondal. This follows an investigation into sexual harassment allegations filed by six players from the state's Under-23 women's cricket team.

The commission determined that the actions of both men violated the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act. Chairperson Iamonlang Syiem confirmed the ruling after reviewing testimonies, digital communications, and documentary evidence. The order noted, “Based on the material on record, including testimonies of the complainants and the submissions of the parties, the Commission finds that the conduct of both respondents amounts to sexual harassment under the POSH Act, 2013.”

Roy faces a three-month suspension from coaching duties and is permanently barred from managing women's teams. He must also receive a formal written warning regarding potential termination. The commission recommended the termination of Mondal, who is additionally required to provide a written apology to the complainants. Both officials are strictly prohibited from contacting the players, and the commission warned that any retaliation will result in further legal consequences.

The inquiry uncovered that the association failed to establish an Internal Committee as required by law. The commission has mandated the creation of this committee within 30 days. Furthermore, the association must implement anti-harassment policies and conduct sensitivity training for all staff within 60 days. Failure to comply with these directives could lead to further prosecution and legal action against the organization.
