Shillong: The Meghalaya government has formally requested assistance from the Union Health Ministry and the Parliamentary Consultative Committee to bolster infrastructure at the Shillong Medical College and Hospital. Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed on Friday that the state is pursuing this support as part of a brownfield development plan.
The project requires new laboratory facilities, hostels for students, and an administrative building, with officials aiming to finish construction within the next year. Shylla noted that the state is currently waiting to hear back from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding a specific date for the institution's inauguration.
Progress on medical education continues elsewhere in the state, as construction on the Tura Medical College is nearing completion. Shylla noted that roughly 95 percent of the work is finished, though he acknowledged that staffing remains a hurdle. He said, "filling teaching positions has been a challenge due to limited interest in faculty recruitment."
Beyond these projects, Meghalaya is pushing for the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences to receive Institute of National Importance status. Both the institute's staff and the local administration support this upgrade, which they believe will allow the facility to expand its healthcare services and improve operational efficiency.
