Shillong: The Election Commission of India has announced that Meghalaya will elect its next Rajya Sabha representative on June 18. Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari confirmed that the formal election notification will be issued on June 1, marking the beginning of the nomination period which runs through June 8.
Election officials will scrutinize submitted papers on June 9, and candidates have until June 11 to withdraw from the race. On election day, polling will take place from 9 am to 4 pm, with vote counting scheduled to begin at 5 pm. The commission aims to complete the entire electoral process by June 20.
During a briefing in Shillong, officials explained the nuances of proportional representation through a single transferable vote. They reminded party representatives of the Supreme Court mandate requiring the disclosure of any criminal antecedents for candidates. Authorities also reviewed the documentation needed for nominations, including security deposits and party authorization forms.
Specific guidelines were issued for MLAs regarding ballot handling. Legislators from political parties are permitted to show their marked ballots only to their authorized party agent. In contrast, independent MLAs are strictly prohibited from showing their ballots to anyone. The state election office has completed all necessary preparations, including venue inspections, to ensure the process remains transparent and organized.
The election in Meghalaya coincides with Rajya Sabha polls occurring across several other states, including Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand.
