Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that electric vehicles are a viable solution for Meghalaya’s hilly landscape. During the launch of five electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme, he emphasized that upgrading public transport is essential to reducing severe traffic congestion in Shillong.
To support the transition, the state government plans to renew a policy that exempts electric vehicles from registration fees and road taxes. While these exemptions recently expired following an initial three-year term, Sangma confirmed they will be reinstated once the Cabinet formally approves the extension. Officials and ministers will also be encouraged to adopt electric vehicles to promote the technology publicly.
The newly introduced air-conditioned buses offer a range of 180 to 200 kilometers per charge and seat 25 passengers. Urban Affairs Commissioner Dr. Vijay Kumar D noted that 50 electric buses have been sanctioned for the city under a Gross Cost Contract model. This system pays operators based on service standards rather than fare revenue.
The government aims to integrate a total fleet of 150 diesel and electric buses within six months to support nearly 60,000 daily commuters. Looking beyond transit, the administration plans to address urban density through improved parking, better planning, and the construction of a new government hub in Mawdiangdiang.
“The ultimate objective is to encourage residents to shift from private vehicles to a reliable and predictable public transport system,” Sangma said.
