Meghalaya Presses Centre to Lift Cap on Foreign-Aided Projects

Shillong: Meghalaya wants the financial handcuffs off. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma pushed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to scrap the existing ceiling on externally aided projects during a trip to New Delhi this week. The state relies on these funds to bankroll major development work. This request builds on a previous meeting held two months ago.

The state wants a clear path forward. Sangma argued that lifting the limit ensures Meghalaya keeps chasing funding for future schemes. He confirmed that officials recently cleared several new projects for the state. “The official meeting has taken place, and certain EAPs have been approved,” Sangma said. The government expects to share specific details once the formal minutes arrive.

The administration remains fixed on two goals. They want the newly approved plans to move ahead while simultaneously lobbying the Union Finance Ministry to clear the path for future applications. Officials in Shillong see this policy change as a necessity for the region.
