Shillong: The Meghalaya government has formally requested infrastructure support from the Union Health Ministry and the Parliamentary Consultative Committee to advance the Shillong Medical College and Hospital project. Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed that officials recently briefed the committee on the critical need for an administrative block, hostels, and laboratories. These facilities must be operational by next year to meet the project timeline.
Addressing the progress of the brownfield development, Shylla stated, "We have requested the Ministry to support these works." The state is currently waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to schedule an official inauguration for the Shillong facility. Meanwhile, construction on the separate Tura Medical College project is nearing completion at 95 percent, though the department faces ongoing challenges regarding faculty recruitment.
Beyond medical college developments, state officials are advocating for the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences to receive the status of an Institute of National Importance. The minister noted that both staff and management support this upgrade, which would allow the institute to expand its service capacity and operate more effectively.
