Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced an ambitious plan to establish 3,000 homestays across the state within the next 12 to 18 months. This expansion is designed to drive local economic growth and provide residents with direct benefits from the rising number of visitors.
The state currently manages 900 active homestays. With the government preparing to sanction an additional 2,100 units, officials hope to significantly bolster the regional tourism sector. The Chief Minister discussed these goals during a visit to Smit village as part of his CM Connect initiative, which promotes direct dialogue between the administration and the public.
While visiting the village, Sangma met with local entrepreneurs and residents who raised concerns regarding local infrastructure, including street lighting and waste management. He promised to coordinate with the relevant departments to address these civic issues.
Looking toward future growth, the government is leveraging programs like PRIME, Skills Meghalaya, and CM Elevate to support hospitality workers. Officials expect the upcoming 39th National Games in 2027 to serve as a major catalyst for the sector, creating new opportunities for tourism and hospitality businesses throughout the state.
