Shillong: Meghalaya is set to expand its creative infrastructure by establishing a Film City and a Film Institute in Shillong, alongside a dedicated Music Institute in Tura. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the development during the inaugural Hello Meghalaya Music Awards held on World Music Day, aiming to cement the state as a premier hub for filmmaking and digital content.

Addressing the event, Sangma emphasized the necessity of these projects for the local workforce. "We want Meghalaya and Shillong to become recognised hubs for music, filmmaking and the entire creative economy," he stated. The Chief Minister noted that supporting young entrepreneurs and artists is as vital as traditional development programs, as these industries provide direct pathways for residents to achieve their professional goals.

The government is also building on the success of the Chief Minister’s Grassroots Music Programme, which currently assists over 7,000 artists. Additionally, the regional OTT platform Hello Meghalaya continues to gain traction. Launched in 2024, the service has already surpassed five lakh downloads and hosts a library of more than 1,000 titles, including various films and music projects.

To further support local creators, the state released a second grant disbursement booklet detailing financial aid for those producing feature films, web series, and short films. Officials expect these new institutions to provide the long-term infrastructure required to foster local talent and scale the regional creative economy.
