Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially opened the Integrated Hospitality and Sports Complex at the JN Sports Complex in Shillong on May 30. This facility, built at a cost of 132.9 crore, serves as a central piece of the state's preparation to host the 39th National Games.
Developed under the Meghalaya Eco-Tourism Infrastructure Development Project with funding from the New Development Bank, the site aims to boost the state's capacity as a regional sporting hub. During the ceremony, Sangma dedicated the venue to the youth of Meghalaya, emphasizing that the project highlights the success of strategic planning and consistent government investment.
The Chief Minister noted that the state has drastically scaled up its commitment to athletics since 2018. He contrasted the current project cost with the 65-crore total annual sports expenditure the government inherited when taking office six years ago. He stated that this shift reflects a broader mission to foster local talent and provide world-class opportunities for athletes.
High-profile guests joined the inauguration, including Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha. The event marks a major milestone in the government's ongoing effort to modernize sports infrastructure across the state.
