Shillong: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has urged the central government to adopt a more flexible approach to implementing higher education schemes across the Northeast. During a regional workshop on the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan and Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, Rymbui stated that the region's difficult terrain and infrastructure limitations frequently delay project timelines.
The event gathered officials from eight northeastern states to discuss financial management and project monitoring. Rymbui emphasized that geography remains a significant barrier to development, noting that accessibility and connectivity issues persist even when land is available for new facilities. He called for a pragmatic shift in how the Ministry of Education handles fund releases and project oversight to better align with the realities of the area.
Stressing the state's dedication to the national development agenda, Rymbui said, "Education continues to be one of the highest priorities of the state government, and we must strengthen our higher education institutions to realise the vision of a developed India by 2047." Meghalaya currently aims to improve access by establishing new institutions and upgrading existing universities.
Ministry of Education officials confirmed the workshop intends to strengthen institutional capacity and monitoring mechanisms for centrally sponsored schemes. As part of this initiative, a ministry team will conduct a three-day field visit to Meghalaya to evaluate the progress of ongoing higher education projects.
