Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially launched a fleet of 55 electric buses on June 9, marking a significant push to modernize the state's public transportation. The rollout is part of the central government's PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, which promotes cleaner and more efficient urban mobility across the country.
The new fleet consists of 25 buses that are nine metres long with a 27-seater capacity and 30 smaller seven-metre buses that seat 22 passengers. Each vehicle features a driving range exceeding 150 kilometres per charge. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the buses include accessibility features for passengers who use wheelchairs.
To support the new fleet, the state is developing a dedicated e-bus depot at Umsawli in New Shillong. This facility will manage the operation and maintenance requirements of the vehicles. The Chief Minister emphasized the project's role in reducing carbon emissions and improving overall infrastructure. Sharing his vision for the project, Sangma stated, "Together, we move towards cleaner, smarter and more efficient mobility."
