Shillong: A new state initiative in Meghalaya seeks to transform menstrual hygiene practices by prioritizing health, environmental conservation, and rural economic independence. The SHE RISE Zero Waste Period Mission, launched by the Shubham Charitable and Welfare Association, aims to provide support to one million women and secure the state's status as India’s first zero-waste period region by 2030.
The mission emerged in 2020 after the Operation Clean-Up campaign revealed significant plastic waste from disposable sanitary pads clogging local water sources. To combat this pollution, the organization introduced Fresh Pad and Fresh Panty, which are BIS-certified, anti-bacterial, and reusable for up to five years.
The program also fosters economic growth for rural women through a partnership with the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society. By distributing free start-up kits to 118 Community Level Federations, the initiative enables local women to manufacture and sell these sustainable products, creating new revenue streams while lowering costs for households.
Supported by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the state government, the campaign is active in regions such as Mairang, Jirang, Nongstoin, Tura, and Williamnagar. Beyond its environmental goals, the mission focuses on community outreach to remove the cultural stigma often associated with menstruation. Organizers hope their Vision 2030 strategy will serve as a national model for sustainable community development.
