Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya is increasing its oversight of the Jowai-Ratacherra section of National Highway 6. During a hearing on Monday, the bench consisting of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh reviewed a status report from the National Highways Authority of India detailing repair efforts completed by June 5, 2026.
The report provided visual evidence of progress on landslide prevention measures, specifically micropiling and the construction of retaining walls. Despite these updates, the court addressed lingering concerns about the poor state of the road, which is marred by significant potholes.
State officials clarified that maintenance of this highway section falls under the jurisdiction of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited instead of the Public Works Department. Consequently, the court added the agency as a respondent and issued a notice requiring representation within three weeks.
While the National Highways Authority of India requested six weeks to finalize current construction, the court granted only three weeks. The bench directed the agency to submit another update before the next hearing on July 2, 2026. The court noted that concerns had earlier been raised regarding the "poor condition of certain road stretches with large potholes."
