Meghalaya High Court Demands Barik Hawkers Relocation Plan

Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya ordered the Shillong Municipal Board on Monday to produce a formal affidavit detailing its relocation strategy for city street vendors. The board must explain how it intends to move these workers to the Brightwell Bungalow Compound in Barik. This order follows a series of public interest litigations regarding sidewalk vending operations.

Court officials and involved parties inspected the proposed site on July 6. Counsel representing some petitioners confirmed the compound offers enough room for the planned stalls and enough space for parking. The board needs to clarify the total stall count, precise mapping, and a strict construction timeline. The court also requires written confirmation that the compound is not a protected heritage structure. Addressing heritage concerns is vital. The board’s counsel requested extra time to compile these facts before the next hearing scheduled for July 29, 2026.
