Shillong: The Jaiñtia National Council and the Jaiñtia Students Union have launched a campaign to secure formal recognition for the Jaiñtia language under the Meghalaya State Language Act. During a meeting in Jowai on Saturday, representatives and scholars gathered to address the preservation of their mother tongue and push for the official adoption of the A-B Jaiñtia Phonetic Alphabet.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh noted that while the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council approved the alphabet in 2021 and published it in the state gazette, the formal adoption process has stalled. Despite this legal status, the organisations are seeking further government action to solidify the language's place in the state curriculum and administration.
JSU president Jersom Shylla raised concerns about conflicting reports regarding the status of the alphabet. Officials have provided varying accounts, with some suggesting the matter sits with the State Law Department while others claim it is pending at the Governor's office. This lack of clarity has prompted the groups to demand an immediate update from the authorities.
Beyond government policy, the organisations are encouraging local writers and scholars to produce more literary works in Jaiñtia to ensure its longevity. The groups have pledged to assist authors in compiling and publishing manuscripts, aiming to build a substantial body of literature for future generations.
