Meghalaya Government Promises Accountability in Women's Cricket Harassment Case

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has declared a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment following allegations involving women cricketers. Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed the administration is taking the claims seriously and remains committed to protecting female athletes across all sporting disciplines.

The controversy centers on reports that former officials at the Meghalaya Cricket Association ignored complaints of sexual assault from players. While the government intends to ensure accountability, Shylla noted that it will not intervene while a formal investigation is ongoing. Current association president James P.K. Sangma has already launched an internal inquiry to review the claims and evaluate whether previous leadership failed to handle the reports correctly.

The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has also stepped in, demanding clarification from the cricket body after the athletes reported their grievances. Authorities are now awaiting the findings of the internal probe before deciding on further disciplinary action or institutional reforms. Shylla emphasized that it would be premature to comment on the specifics until the investigation report is released to the public.
