Shillong: Meghalaya’s monthly Farmers Market just wrapped its eighth edition. Attendance hit 5,000 total visitors since the event began. The August outing in Shillong moved high volumes of cabbage, maize, and pineapple alongside various local fruits and vegetables.
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare runs the show through 1917 iTEAMS. The Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission backs the effort. It cuts out the middleman to link rural producers with urban wallets. Growers use these sessions to gauge demand for organic and local goods.
Aroma Talang, a farmer from Thadmuthlong B in West Jaintia Hills, joined the market for the second time. She started organic farming in 2025. "The market had helped her showcase her produce and reach customers directly," Talang said. First-time participant Store Kharlukhi from Kdiap saw her entire stock vanish within hours of the gates opening.
The project now reaches beyond the physical market. A deal with the Shillong delivery service SOMOI gets goods to homes across the city. This creates extra work for delivery crews and opens new revenue streams for farmers. Buyers praise the fresh stock and low prices. They also get a rare chance to talk shop with the people growing their food.
