Shillong: Shillong’s monthly Farmers' Market drew nearly 1,000 visitors this Saturday. Stalls overflowed with cabbage, maize, pineapple, and other organic goods. Farmers moved stock fast. It was the eighth installment of the event since it started in January.
Organized by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, the initiative now holds support from the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission. Total attendance surpassed 5,000 people over the year. Buyers prize the freshness, fair pricing, and the chance to speak directly with the growers.
One newcomer to organic farming watched supplies vanish hours after the gates opened. Sellers from across the state reported strong demand. "What began in January this year as a simple idea has steadily gathered momentum," organizers noted regarding the project's growth. The event now functions as a community hub rather than a basic market.
Organizers added a lucky draw and a bouncy castle to engage families. A new partnership with the delivery service SOMOI now brings produce directly to city homes. This move also creates jobs for local youth. The market currently bolsters organic agriculture, women’s entrepreneurship, and the link between urban kitchens and rural hills.
