Shillong: Sohiong sold out fast at the latest Shillong Farmers Market. A farmer from Mairang cleared three baskets of the fruit before midday. Demand for local goods is surging. Simendaris Ryntathiang, an organic grower from Eastern West Khasi Hills, sold her entire stock during her second appearance at the event. She plans to bring more next time.
The September edition displayed a variety of tomatoes, fruits, vegetables, and value-added goods from across Meghalaya. Over nine months, the market has hosted more than 300 farmers. It bridges the gap between rural fields and urban kitchens. Farmers get a direct line to city buyers.
New faces joined the trade this month. Philisha Mynsong from Mawjam in Mawkynrew felt uncertain about her stall initially. She found relief quickly. "I was initially nervous about setting up her stall but was encouraged by customers who began enquiring about and buying her produce," she said. Rhinda Susngi, another newcomer from Thadlaskein in West Jaintia Hills, confirmed the platform helps organic farmers reach consumers directly.
The market also started a delivery partnership with the homegrown platform SOMOI. This push brings farm-fresh items to households throughout Shillong. The project expands reach beyond the physical stalls.
