Shillong: Shillong hosted its ninth monthly Farmers’ Market this past Saturday. It bridges the gap between rural growers and city buyers. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare managed the event through 1917 iTEAMS, supported by the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission.
Tables overflowed with seasonal sohiong, wild cherries, and fresh tomatoes. Value-added goods also lined the stalls. The government aims to tighten local food chains and grant farmers better access to paying customers.
Simendaris Ryntathiang traveled from Mairang in the Eastern West Khasi Hills. She brought three baskets of sohiong to the event. They sold out before midday. The organic farmer said, "I was delighted by the response from customers."
Philisha Mynsong joined the market for the first time. She brought her harvest from Mawjam, located in the Mawkynrew area of East Khasi Hills. She felt nervous at first. Shoppers swarmed her stall almost immediately. Mynsong plans to return for future editions to showcase more of her work.
