Shillong: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui expressed confidence that Meghalaya will significantly boost its Performance Grading Index (PGI) ranking in future assessments. The state currently holds the lowest position in India with 417.9 points out of 1,000 in the PGI 2.0 report. Rymbui attributed the expected turnaround to comprehensive reforms implemented across the education sector over the last eight years.
Rymbui argued that the PGI should be viewed as a tool for systemic improvement rather than just a scorecard. He noted that stakeholders, including teachers and administrators, are focused on enhancing student welfare, accessibility, and overall quality of education. "The important question is whether the government has done anything to address the challenges in the education sector. The answer is yes. There has been a consistent improvement in scores over the years," he said.
The state government is also examining ways to incorporate Artificial Intelligence and modern technology into its classrooms. Rymbui acknowledged that while integrating AI into the curriculum presents practical hurdles, such as the need for trained staff and specialized resources, the state remains committed to updating its teaching methods. He noted that the government is evaluating all options to ensure local students keep pace with global technological advancements.
While the minister cautioned that introducing AI as a formal subject requires careful planning and strategic partnerships, he emphasized the necessity of progress. "We have to catch up and not only catch up, but also move with new-age technology and new-age ways of teaching. That is why, we are trying to bring about change," he added.
