Shillong: The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union (AMDWU) marked International Domestic Workers’ Day by calling for better legal protections, fair compensation, and improved social security for domestic staff across the state. Union leaders highlighted that despite the essential role these workers play in the economy, they continue to face a lack of formal recognition and limited access to welfare benefits.
Vice-president Elbina Mary Nongkhlaw emphasized the systemic challenges faced by the workforce, which is composed largely of women who often struggle with limited educational and employment opportunities. Nongkhlaw stated, "While domestic workers are vital to households and the economy, they lack formal recognition and access to welfare benefits."
To address these financial disparities, the union proposed a minimum wage of Rs 600 per day for full-time employees. For those working one hour a day, the union suggested a minimum monthly rate of Rs 3,000. Beyond pay, the AMDWU is advocating for the creation of a dedicated Welfare Board to provide workers with insurance, institutional support, and access to government schemes.
The union is also focusing on combating harassment and workplace exploitation by encouraging workers to report abuse. Through ongoing registration drives and awareness programs, the AMDWU aims to help staff members understand and assert their labour rights. The organization continues to push for systemic changes that ensure this workforce receives the respect and compensation reflective of their contribution to society.
