Meghalaya Contractors Urge KHADC to Limit Trading Licences for Outsiders

Shillong: The Meghalaya Alliance of Contractors and Suppliers Welfare Association met with the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council on Thursday. The group urged the council to implement stricter policies regarding the issuance of trading licences to individuals and firms from outside the state.

Association members argued that the KHADC should stop granting licences to outsiders for projects that local entrepreneurs can complete themselves. They specifically requested that small-scale contracts, minor construction work, and supply orders be reserved exclusively for local companies.

By prioritizing indigenous businesses, the association aims to strengthen the local economy and create new job opportunities for the region's youth. The group also called for more rigorous monitoring and enforcement of the existing Trading by Non-Tribals Regulation to ensure local expertise is utilized.

The delegation expressed optimism following the meeting, stating their hope that the council will take decisive action to protect the interests of local businesses. They maintained that supporting indigenous firms is essential for maintaining the integrity of the state business sector.
