Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party President Conrad K. Sangma has praised the release of 14 Kuki civilians previously detained in Manipur's Senapati district. He commended the United Naga Council, tribal hohos, and civil society leaders for facilitating the move, which he described as a significant humanitarian gesture.
Sangma stated, "I welcome and deeply appreciate the decision of the United Naga Council (UNC), the Naga tribal hohos, civil society organisations, community leaders, and all concerned stakeholders to facilitate the release of the 14 Kuki civilians who had been detained in Senapati." He noted that the action reflects the enduring values of compassion and dignity held by the Naga people during a period of ongoing ethnic conflict.
While acknowledging the gesture as a sign of hope, the Chief Minister urged Kuki community leaders to reciprocate the action. He called for the immediate and unconditional release of six Naga civilians currently held in captivity, suggesting that their safe return would serve as a crucial step toward rebuilding trust and restoring normalcy in the region.
The NPP leader emphasized that innocent citizens should not be victims of broader conflicts. He reaffirmed his party's dedication to reconciliation and urged all stakeholders to continue prioritizing humanitarian values to foster lasting peace across Manipur.
