Meghalaya CM Shifts Stance on Uniform Civil Code

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has adopted a more flexible position regarding the proposed Uniform Civil Code. After previously opposing the measure, Sangma stated he now feels more comfortable with the concept following the implementation of similar laws in Assam and Uttarakhand.

Sangma noted that his initial resistance was driven by fears that a national framework might override Meghalaya’s unique matrilineal system and tribal traditions. However, the recent decision by other states to exempt tribal customary laws from their versions of the code has addressed his primary concerns regarding local protections.

Despite this shift, the Chief Minister confirmed the state government will not finalize its stance until it reviews the specific provisions of any proposed national legislation. He emphasized that the term Uniform Civil Code remains broad, and the government plans to evaluate future drafts from both legal and political perspectives to ensure that indigenous practices remain secure.
