Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet approved a new regulation on Wednesday to standardize the use of name boards on government vehicles. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the move, which aims to discourage VIP culture and bring consistency to how official transport is identified across the state.

The new rules limit the use of name boards to authorized office-bearers in the government, judiciary, administration, and specific statutory bodies. The Transport Department has already identified the eligible categories and created a uniform design format based on official designations.

This initiative is intended to curb the misuse of unauthorized symbols and designation boards. It builds on previous government efforts to regulate the use of sirens and beacon lights as part of a broader push for transparency and discipline in public administration.

The Transport Department will release detailed guidelines soon, which will cover the approved designs, authorized users, and enforcement procedures. The government expects these measures to eliminate unnecessary displays of authority while ensuring that only legitimate public officials utilize official identification on their vehicles.
